All time-based media functions within the same conceptual limits, the same fixed linear presentation of imagery. It is only through the placement of this imagery in time itself that relationships and understanding can be established. On a transparent level, FIRST THIS, THEN THIS draws the viewer’s attention to the two appropriated clips as they relate to each other in the immediate sense of screen time and the broader sense of historical or literal time. More importantly however, the film uses the concept of relational juxtaposition in time and the media itself to infer a greater meaning: the analysis of the structural, systemic relationships of class, race and the application of resources and concern.
